Homestead Exemption: A Must-Do for Georgia Homeowners!
If you purchased a home in Georgia in 2024 or officially made your property your primary residence by December 31st, filing for the Homestead Exemption should be at the top of your to-do list! Even though HB 581 will take effect, it is still a good idea to get this done.
This one-time filing can significantly reduce your taxable home value, saving you money on property taxes. However, there are important rules and deadlines you need to follow.
In Chatham County – The Stephens-Day Exemption freezes the taxable value at the price you paid for your home, ensuring long-term tax savings.
In Bryan, Bulloch, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long, McIntosh, and Tattnall Counties – Filing lowers your taxable value, reducing your property taxes, but does not freeze it like in Chatham County.
Filing Deadline: April 1, 2025
